Trail Tail: Dog Adventures

Effective: June 16, 2026

Last updated: June 16, 2026

Trail Tail (“the App,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a dog-walking companion app that helps you track walks, discover dog-friendly trails, and keep a memory book of your adventures. We care about your privacy and built Trail Tail to keep your data on your device and in your own iCloud account wherever possible. This policy explains what we collect, how it is used, and the choices you have.

Summary

  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.
  • Most of your data (dog profiles, walks, photos, memories) stays on your device.
  • Community features (publishing trails, public profiles, ratings) use Apple iCloud / CloudKit under your own Apple ID.
  • Location tracking is optional and can be turned off at any time.

Information We Collect

Information you provide

  • Dog profiles: name, breed, birthday (optional), and any photo you add.
  • Owner/public profile (optional): display name, bio, and home region — only if you choose to make a public profile.
  • Adventure content: photos you capture or add, and trail ratings/reviews you write.
  • Reports: if you report community content, we record the report and the reason.

Information collected automatically

  • Location data: with your permission, the App uses your device’s GPS to record your walking route, show nearby trails, and calculate distance, pace, and time. With “Always” permission, tracking can continue in the background during an active walk. Location is only collected while you use location features and is not collected when tracking is turned off.
  • Walk statistics: distance, duration, pace, route geometry, and earned rewards (“treats”), derived from your walks.

Information we do not collect

  • We do not collect contacts, browsing history, or device advertising identifiers.
  • We do not integrate third-party advertising or analytics services.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information above to:

  • Record and display your walks and adventure memories.
  • Show nearby dog-friendly trails and places.
  • Maintain streaks, achievements, badges, and progression.
  • Power optional community features (publishing trails, public profiles, ratings, and moderation).
  • Send local reminder notifications (e.g., daily walk and streak nudges). These are scheduled on your device; we do not send remote push notifications.

How Your Information Is Stored

  • On-device: Dog profiles, walks, photos, memories, and settings are stored locally on your device.
  • Apple iCloud / CloudKit: If you use community features, certain data — such as published trails, your optional public profile, ratings/reviews, and reports — is stored in Apple’s CloudKit public database associated with your Apple ID. This data is handled in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy.
  • We do not operate our own servers that collect your personal data.

Sharing of Information

We share information only in these limited cases:

  • Community content you choose to publish. Trails, public profile details, and ratings/reviews you publish are visible to other users. You control whether to make a public profile and what to publish.
  • Route precision controls. When publishing, you can choose to share an exact or a coarsened route to protect sensitive locations (such as near your home).
  • Service providers / platform. Community data is processed by Apple via CloudKit. Map and trail data are provided through Apple MapKit and OpenStreetMap.
  • Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect rights, safety, or the integrity of the service.

We never sell your personal information.

Third-Party Services

Trail Tail relies on the following third-party data sources and platforms:

  • Apple MapKit / Apple Maps — maps, geocoding, and place data.
  • OpenStreetMap (Overpass API) — dog-friendly trail and point-of-interest data.
  • Apple iCloud / CloudKit — storage for community features.

Your use of these services is also subject to their respective terms and privacy policies.

Your Choices and Controls

  • Location: You can enable or disable tracking in the App’s profile settings, and manage location permission in iOS Settings at any time.
  • Public profile: Making a public profile is optional and can be turned off.
  • Route privacy: Choose exact or coarse route sharing when publishing.
  • Notifications: Manage notification permission in iOS Settings.
  • Deleting data: You can delete dogs, adventures, and photos within the App. To remove published community content or your public profile, delete it in the App. You may also manage iCloud data through your Apple ID settings.

Data Retention

On-device data is retained until you delete it or remove the App. Community data you publish to CloudKit is retained until you delete it or it is removed through moderation.

Children’s Privacy

Trail Tail is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.

Security

We rely on the security protections provided by Apple’s platform, including on-device storage and CloudKit. While no method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the App after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
